In a dynamic collaboration, Hydrogen Payment Services Company Limited (Hydrogen) and Co Creation Hub (CcHub) recently hosted the Catalyst workshop, igniting discussions on resilient business models for African startups. The event, held in Lagos, aimed to equip businesses with the tools necessary for thriving, gaining recognition, and achieving global acclaim.
Adapting Fintech Business Models: The Key to Resilience
The panel discussion, expertly moderated by Miracle Ezechi, Digital Marketing Manager at Hydrogen, delved into critical themes: “Adapting Fintech Business Models to Economic Climes: Flexibility, Agility, and Customer-centricity.” Among the distinguished panelists was Mr. Emeka Awagu, Chief Technology Officer at Hydrogen. Awagu emphasized the pivotal role of customer-centricity in Fintech growth. His advice to startups? Listen keenly to customer demands, understand their evolving needs, and develop solutions that ensure long-term market viability.
“Innovation is the lifeblood of startup growth,” Awagu asserted. “However, understanding customer behavior and needs is equally crucial. Startups must be agile, flexible, and willing to learn from past failures.”
Navigating Choppy Waters: The Startup Reality
Startup failure rates remain alarmingly high, with 61.07 percent of ventures facing adversity. Financial mismanagement often lies at the heart of these failures. Awagu stressed the importance of maintaining a healthy Cost-to-Earnings ratio—not just as a number but as a vital indicator of a company’s financial health and investor appeal.
Sustainability and Adaptability: The Startup Imperative
Ina Alogwu, Group Director of Digital Transformation at ARM HOLDCO, echoed the sentiment. Speaking as a fellow panelist, she emphasized the need for startups to create sustainable products and solutions. In an ever-evolving economic landscape, adaptability is key. Alogwu encouraged startups to embrace change, learn from mistakes, and avoid rigidity in their solutions.
