#LAWMA Takes Action: 343 Contravention Notices Issued to Construction Sites

In a determined effort to enforce responsible waste management practices, the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has wielded its authority by serving 343 contravention notices to construction sites across various locations in the state over the past year. These notices were issued to construction firms that failed to comply with the regulations governing construction waste management, as meticulously supervised by LAWMA.

Commissioner for The Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, emphasized the agency’s commitment to maintaining order and accountability. In addition to the contravention notices, 354 new introductions notices were issued to construction firms during the same period. LAWMA also took decisive action against 10 recalcitrant sites that persisted in flouting waste management guidelines.

The battle against waste mismanagement extends beyond construction sites. LAWMA identified 103 black spots throughout the state—areas plagued by illegal dumping and environmental degradation. Mobilizing its operations teams, LAWMA worked tirelessly to clear these blighted locations.

Despite persistent public awareness campaigns, some residents continue to defy proper waste disposal practices. Rather than patronizing assigned Public Service Providers (PSPs), they choose to dump waste in canals and on road medians. Commissioner Wahab sternly called for an end to this detrimental habit.

LAWMA’s commitment to sustainable waste solutions is evident through its strategic partnerships. An MoU with the State Government and Jospong Group focuses on waste treatment solutions. Existing landfill sites are being reengineered to optimize solid waste management and create employment opportunities.

Collaborating with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and the Food and Beverage Recycling Alliance (FBRA), LAWMA identifies locations for plastic recycling facilities. This initiative aims to remove plastic items from the environment while fostering job creation.

The Marine Unit of LAWMA received a boost, acquiring five additional rafters to enhance the collection of on-shore and off-shore waste.

Marketplaces have not been overlooked. LAWMA’s year-round stakeholder engagement has improved hygiene practices, containerization, and evacuation within these bustling hubs.

To sustain its achievements, LAWMA emphasizes continuous public enlightenment. Messages promoting efficient waste management practices must resonate across all media platforms.

LAWMA Academy plays a crucial role in educating the next generation. With an average of 1,400 pupils from eight primary schools participating in waste management education, the impact is far-reaching.
