As Lagos prepares for the rainy season, the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has successfully completed the rehabilitation of the Olusosun dumpsite, a key move to ensure uninterrupted waste management operations throughout the state.

Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, the Managing Director/CEO of LAWMA, in a statement on Thursday, highlighted that the refurbishment was strategically undertaken to boost operational efficiency in readiness for the rainy season. “The main goal of the Olusosun dumpsite rehabilitation is to facilitate the smooth movement of waste disposal trucks, even under challenging weather conditions, particularly during the heavy rains that often present logistical hurdles,” he said.

In line with the recent maintenance work, LAWMA is also concentrating on improving operational efficiency to enhance the turnaround times for waste disposal trucks. This initiative is expected to significantly decrease waiting times, leading to quicker and more efficient waste collection services.

Dr. Gbadegesin emphasized LAWMA’s dedication to environmental sustainability, calling on residents to adopt responsible waste disposal habits. “Our commitment to the environment goes beyond just operational improvements. We encourage residents to practice responsible waste disposal to protect our environment,” he urged.

The LAWMA chief also underscored the critical role of proper waste disposal, urging residents to refrain from dumping waste into drains, which is particularly problematic during the rainy season as it can disrupt the drainage system and pose significant environmental hazards.

Residents are encouraged to use accredited Private Sector Participation (PSP) operators for their waste disposal needs. “Supporting licensed operators not only contributes to a cleaner environment but also promotes a healthier community for everyone,” Dr. Gbadegesin reiterated.

He stressed the importance of residents getting to know their local PSPs, who are crucial in managing waste effectively at the community level. “By engaging with your designated PSP operators, you can ensure that waste disposal services in your area are both efficient and effective,” he added.

Dr. Gbadegesin assured residents that LAWMA is committed to making detailed PSP contact information available for all areas in the state. “This effort is designed to empower residents to actively participate in waste management practices in their neighborhoods, leading to a cleaner and healthier environment for everyone,” he concluded.
