The State of Osun Commissioner for Women, Children and Social Affairs, Barr. Olubukola Olaboopo has disclosed that the State of Osun is actively working on positioning women in sports on the global limelight.
She made this known during a press briefing to intimate and unveil the ministry’s project tagged ”OSUN WOMEN RUN 2020”. The run which is going to be an annual event is positioned to be an international race which will attract women athletes from around the world while also showcasing Osun women athletes.
The program is aimed at attracting development partners in sports and foreign aid to Osun women who are in sports.
The Commissioner pointed out that the run which is going to be a Marathon race shall hunt for
talents, stressing that women who are naturally blessed in
the skills of athletics who are based in Osun will be unveiled so that
they enjoy Government support.
She noted that the race would be registered with the International
Association of Athletic Federation (IAAF) and that Osun state will be
included in the body’s international calendar of events, thus parading the State as a gender friendly sports and tourism State.
She added that the race has great benefits as it would boost
the State’s economy, promote the cultural heritage of the State and expose the visitors to
various tourist sites in the State.
The Commissioner however emphasized that the State Government has taken a
giant stride by making adequate provisions for the safety of life and property of
both the local and international participants.
She mentioned that the event has been endorsed by the Athletics Federation of Nigeria. She further stated that a Local Organising Committee has been inaugurated for the program and it comprises the ministry of youth and sports, ministry of culture and tourism, the national association of women in sports, State of Osun chapter, law enforcement agents, FRSC, ministry of information, ministry of health, Members of Athletics Federation of Nigeria amongst others.
Speaking earlier, the Project Coordinator, Osun Women Run Mr.
Ibukunoluwa Abimbola, reiterated that the official website for the run will come life today and that
a minimum of Five Thousand and maximum of Ten
Thousand participants are expected at the event, he reiterated that the event is going to be
one of the biggest races in the world.
According to Mr. Abimbola, the State is collaborating with
different airlines to ensure rebate in ticketing to elite athletics
to enable them fly into the country at a low cost.
Arrangements have also been made with hoteliers across the State for accommodations. He noted that SUBEB junction in Osogbo will be the take off point for
the race and it will terminate at the Osogbo City Stadium.

In his remarks, Michael Hughes, member of International Association of
Athletic Federation who arrived Osun from South Africa for the purpose of this event disclosed that
the purpose of his coming is to measure the route for the race,
stating that the state is peaceful and a good location for the race.
